How to Turn a Video Podcast Episode into YouTube Shorts on a Mac
A one-hour episode usually holds five to ten moments that can stand alone: a sharp opinion, a surprising number, a short story with a payoff. Shorts made from those moments are how new listeners find the full show. The hard part is not editing, it is finding the moments and cutting them cleanly, every week.
What makes a podcast moment clip-worthy
- The first sentence is the hook. "99% of people who say this are wrong" works. "And so, like I was saying" does not.
- It stands alone. A viewer who has never heard the show should understand it without the previous ten minutes.
- It ends when the point lands. Cut right after the payoff, not halfway into the next question.
- It is not housekeeping. Sponsor reads, intros and "link in the description" segments rarely travel.
A repeatable weekly workflow
- Start from your own recording or your published YouTube episode. A local file is the most reliable source.
- Transcribe it. ViralClips transcribes on your Mac, so the full episode never leaves your machine.
- Generate candidates. Auto mode proposes several vertical clips from the episode for you to review.
- Review and adjust. Watch each candidate. If you already know the exact cut, switch to manual mode and set the start and end yourself.
- Caption and export. Pick a caption style; ViralClips burns word-highlighted captions into a 1080 × 1920 export with audio intact.
- Publish. Generate an editable title and description from the clip transcript, then upload to YouTube. Uploads default to Private until you choose otherwise.
How many Shorts per episode?
Three strong clips beat ten weak ones. Start with three per episode, publish them through the week, and check which openings hold viewers. That tells you what to look for next time.
Why a local Mac app
Episodes are big files. A desktop app avoids uploading them to a cloud editor and avoids per-minute processing credits, which adds up for a weekly show. ViralClips is $50 once for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or newer.
